Everything works in the browser: nothing to install.

In short

  • One API for the private markets and IPOs: company profiles, reported valuations with date and source, IPO pipeline and calendar, lock-ups, real-time SEC events of US listed companies, rounds declared on Form D, fund marks from SEC N-PORT, performance after the IPO and risk checks on any company.
  • Three ways to use it: a REST API, a widget you paste into your pages in 16 languages, and signed webhooks that tell your systems when something changes.
  • It works from the browser and your code, with nothing to install. You start on Free with 1,000 calls a month, no card and a $50 welcome credit.
  • Four packages: Free at no cost, Professional $99, Business $499 and Enterprise $2,990 a month; the year costs 10 months.
  • It is an information tool: reported valuations are not market prices, and decisions remain with you.

Private companies now stay private for many years, and readers, users and clients want to follow them: what they are worth, when they might list, what happened after the debut. The information exists, but it is spread across press releases, SEC filings and fund reports, each with its own format and timing.

Unicorn Data collects it, adds a date and a public source to every figure and delivers it in a form your product can use. This article explains the problem it solves, who uses it, how to start and what it costs.

The problem: scattered data that takes months to build

Building a private market dataset in house means reading filings every day, matching company names across sources, tracking lock-up dates and keeping a history of every valuation. It takes a team, and mistakes are easy: a valuation without a date, a lock-up that moved, an 8-K that nobody read.

For a media site or an investment app the cost is also time to market. A calendar of upcoming IPOs or a page on a pre-IPO company is useful only if it is updated, sourced and available in the language of your users.

What data you get

  • Company profiles and valuation history: the largest private companies, with each reported valuation, round, date and public source. Data comes from Unicorn Watch, the tracker of Unicorn Private.
  • IPO pipeline, calendar and lock-ups: status of each company on its way to listing, expected dates and the end of lock-up periods.
  • Real-time SEC events of US listed companies: 8-K items such as capital raises, board changes, acquisitions and insolvency, plus S-1, 424B4 and tender offers, filtered by CIK, ticker or category, also as webhooks.
  • Rounds declared to the SEC (Form D): offerings filed by private companies; from Business, extended coverage of about 1,000 US private companies.
  • Quarterly fund marks (SEC N-PORT): the price at which registered funds value their holdings in private companies, searchable by name, CUSIP or LEI, from Professional.
  • Performance after the IPO: debut, returns at 1, 3 and 12 months and the end of the lock-up for recent US IPOs.
  • Risks of any company: a risk check by LEI or by name and country, with sanctions traffic light, proceedings by authorities, litigation and a grade from A to E, from the engine of Unicorn Intelligence. Every package includes some checks each month.

The dashboard also has an Ask box: write what you need in plain words, such as "create a key" or "show my usage this month", and it prepares the action.

How to use it, step by step

  1. Open the site and sign in with your business email: Free is active at once, with no card.
  2. Create an API key in the dashboard and make your first call following the documentation, with examples in curl, JavaScript and Python.
  3. To show data without writing code, paste the widget script into your page and choose the view, such as upcoming IPOs or the largest companies.
  4. Add a webhook endpoint to receive new filings, valuation changes or risk changes as they happen, signed with HMAC SHA-256.
  5. Follow usage in the dashboard and choose a larger package when your traffic grows.

The four packages

Each package includes everything in the previous one and has the full API. Paid packages are charged by card from the first day, monthly or yearly; the year costs 10 months.

What it does not do

Unicorn Data is an information tool. Reported valuations come from public sources and are not market prices; fund marks are the values funds report, not offers to buy or sell. The risk rating summarizes public sources, each with its date, and is not a judgement on the company. Nothing in the data is investment advice, and decisions remain with you.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to install anything?

No. You call the API from your code or paste the widget into your pages. The dashboard works in the browser.

Do I need a card to start?

No. Free includes 1,000 API calls a month and needs no card. The $50 welcome credit covers usage beyond the limits; a card is asked only when usage goes past it.

Where do the figures come from?

From public sources such as SEC filings, fund reports and company announcements. Every figure carries its date and source, so you can show them to your readers.

Can I use the data in my own product?

Yes, inside your app or site. Redistributing the data in products for your customers requires the Enterprise package.

Is the data investment advice?

No. It is information with sources and dates. Reported valuations are not market prices and decisions remain with you.

Investing involves the risk of losing capital.
